LG’s new display panel can be stretched, folded and twisted

LG continues to showcase its prowess in innovative display technology, having been a trailblazer in screens of diverse forms and sizes. The brand’s most recent display panel stands out as particularly impressive – a versatile screen that not only folds and twists but can also be expanded, increasing its size by up to 20 percent.

Measuring 12 inches initially, this LG panel can stretch to a remarkable 14 inches and effortlessly revert to its original 12-inch size when the tension is released, all without causing any harm to the display. Referred to as a ‘free-form’ display panel, it holds the potential to be integrated into a variety of smart products, including those featuring moving components such as furniture fabric.

The stretching capability of the screen is made possible by micro-LEDs connected through S-shaped springs rather than conventional straight wires. This unique design enables the entire mechanism to expand seamlessly when pulled. Despite its dynamic features, the display panel maintains a commendable resolution density of approximately 100 pixels per inch (ppi). With full RGB support, users can expect vibrant colors without compromising on clarity or experiencing pixelation.

According to a report from GSMArena, the display panel is robust enough to support the weight of a user sitting on it without sustaining damage. LG envisions the widespread adoption of this technology across various industries, including fashion, gaming, and wearables. Additionally, the versatile display holds promise for applications in automobiles, aligning with the ongoing industry trend towards smarter dashboards and features that enhance in-car experiences with both functionality and futuristic aesthetics.
